Windscreen chip or crack: repair or replace?

A small chip can often be repaired before it spreads. A crack in the driver's line of sight can fail a WOF.

Safe to drive? A small chip is usually fine to drive on. A crack that blocks your view or a badly damaged screen: get it replaced before driving.

Repair

Small chips outside the driver's main view can usually be filled. Repair sooner rather than later, as heat and bumps make chips spread.

Replace

Long cracks, damage at the edge of the glass or damage in the driver's view usually mean a new windscreen.

Cameras and sensors

Cars with lane assist or emergency braking cameras behind the windscreen may need the camera recalibrated after replacement. Ask if it is included.

Insurance

Many policies include glass cover, sometimes with a lower excess. Check before you book.

Questions

Will a chip fail a WOF?

It depends on size and position. Damage in the area swept by the wipers in front of the driver is the main concern.

What should I put in the job?

Make, model and year, the size and position of the damage, and whether the car has a camera behind the screen.
