Car problem guide

Car broken down: what to do next.

Get safe first, then work out whether it can be fixed where it is or needs a tow.

Safe to drive? Do not try to drive with red warning lights, overheating, or after an accident that has damaged wheels or steering.

Get safe

Pull as far off the road as you can, hazard lights on, and get passengers out on the side away from traffic. On a motorway, stand behind the barrier. In danger, call 111.

Check your cover

Roadside assistance may come with your insurance, car finance or a membership.

Fix on the spot or tow

Flat batteries, flat tyres and some minor faults can often be sorted where the car is by a mobile mechanic. Overheating, oil pressure warnings, accidents or anything unsafe usually means a tow.

What to tell the provider

Exactly where the car is, what happened, warning lights, whether it starts, and whether it is blocking traffic.

Safe to drive?

Do not try to drive with red warning lights, overheating, or after an accident that has damaged wheels or steering.

General guidance only, not a diagnosis. If in doubt, do not drive it and have it inspected. In an emergency, call 111.

Questions

Can a mobile mechanic come to the roadside?

For many jobs yes, if it is safe to work there. On motorways a tow to a safe place is often needed first.

What should I put in the job?

Location, the problem, and where you want the car taken if it needs a tow.
