Oil warning light on: what to do.

The red oil light usually means low oil pressure, and an engine can be damaged in minutes without it. This is one warning light not to drive on.

Safe to drive? Red oil pressure light on: do not keep driving. Check the level, and if it stays on, arrange a mobile mechanic or a tow.

Stop first

Pull over safely and switch off. Wait a few minutes, then check the dipstick on level ground.

If the oil is low

Top up with the correct oil to the full mark. If the light goes out and stays out, book in to find out where the oil is going: a leak or burning oil.

If the oil level is fine

The light may still mean low pressure from a worn pump or blocked pickup, or it may be a faulty sensor. Do not drive until it is checked.

Amber oil light

Some cars show an amber light or message for low level or service due, which is less urgent. Check the handbook.
