Car problem guide

DPF warning light on a diesel.

The diesel particulate filter traps soot and burns it off on longer runs. Lots of short trips can block it, and the light is the car asking for help.

Safe to drive? Light on but the car drives normally: try a longer run if the handbook says so and book in if it stays on. Limp mode or a flashing light: book in promptly.

Why it happens

Short trips, idling and stop-start driving do not get the exhaust hot enough for the filter to clean itself (regenerate).

What you can try

If the handbook allows, a steady 20 to 30 minute drive at motorway speed can let it regenerate. Follow the handbook instructions.

When it needs a workshop

If the light stays on, flashes, or the car goes into limp mode, a forced regeneration with a scan tool, a sensor repair or a filter clean may be needed.

What to tell the mechanic

Your typical driving, any other warning lights, limp mode, and whether a regeneration has been tried.

General guidance only, not a diagnosis. If in doubt, do not drive it and have it inspected. In an emergency, call 111.
