Car problem guide

Car key not working or lost.

Most modern keys contain a chip the car must recognise before it will start. A specialist can usually cut and program a new one without a trip to the dealer.

Safe to drive? If the car will not start, a mobile auto locksmith can come to the car.

Remote not working

Try a new remote battery first. If the remote buttons fail but the key starts the car, it is often the battery or the remote board.

Key turns but car will not start

A flashing security light usually means the car is not recognising the key chip. Try the spare key.

All keys lost

An auto locksmith can often make and program a key on site. You will need proof of ownership.

What to tell the locksmith

Make, model and year, what is not working, whether you have any working key, and where the car is.

General guidance only, not a diagnosis. If in doubt, do not drive it and have it inspected. In an emergency, call 111.
