Kilometres and years
Manufacturers set the interval by both distance and age, whichever comes first. A car that does few kilometres can still be due because of age.
Finding the history
Check the service book, invoices or a sticker in the engine bay. If there is no record, treat it as due, especially on a car you have just bought.
Belt or chain
Some engines use a timing chain, which usually lasts much longer but can stretch. A rattle on cold start can be a sign.
What else gets replaced
Tensioners and idlers are commonly replaced with the belt, and on many engines the water pump too, because they are already accessible.
Safe to drive?
If it is overdue, book it in soon and avoid long trips until it is done.
General guidance only, not a diagnosis. If in doubt, do not drive it and have it inspected. In an emergency, call 111.

Questions
What happens if a cambelt breaks?
The engine stops immediately. On many engines the valves and pistons collide, causing expensive damage.
How do I compare quotes?
Ask each provider to itemise what is included: belt, tensioners, idlers, water pump, coolant and labour.
