ABS warning light on: what to do.

The ABS light means the anti-lock braking system has found a fault and switched itself off. Your normal brakes usually still work, but without the anti-lock help.

Safe to drive? ABS light alone with a normal pedal: drive carefully, leave more distance and book in. Red brake light on too, or the pedal feels soft: stop driving.

Common causes

A faulty wheel speed sensor, damaged sensor wiring, a dirty tone ring, low brake fluid or an ABS module fault.

ABS and brake light together

If the red brake warning light is also on, the problem may affect normal braking, for example low fluid. Treat that as urgent.

WOF

An ABS warning light that stays on is a WOF fail on vehicles fitted with ABS.

What to tell the mechanic

When it came on, whether the red brake light is also on, any change in pedal feel, and recent brake or wheel work.

General guidance only, not a diagnosis. If in doubt, do not drive it and have it inspected. In an emergency, call 111.

Questions

Can a scan find the fault?

Yes. An ABS-capable scan tool reads which sensor or circuit is at fault, then the mechanic tests to confirm.

What should I put in the job?

The warning lights showing and any recent brake, wheel bearing or tyre work.
